Like most people my age, at this point in my life I am trying to figure out exactly who I am and what I want to accomplish in my life. This is an exceedingly challenging task. I definitely do NOT have it figured out just yet, and I'm not all that sure that I ever will.
The other day I was volunteering at the library and was just supposed to be shelf reading (basically just making sure books are in the right place) which is super boring so, of course I started looking at interesting books, and I found one that had some really cool thoughts in it that I wouldn't have normally even looked at. Anyway there were just really cool ideas in it and I just wanted to write them down to remember, and some of it has to do with figuring out who you are. Enjoy.
The book (written by Elizabeth Berkley btw) was like questions that people have asked her over the years and she answers them. So these are the two questions that caught my interest and I wanted to share;
How do I find out who I am?
- Identify what matters to you.
- Find your core values
- Don't limit your thinking
- Open up to new experiences. Push your comfort zone. (This is something I am really bad at because I'm shy, I wish I could do this more but it just scares me. I guess I will have to work on that.)
- Let go of who you are NOT. (I love this one, I guess I've never really thought about this before but I'm thinking that if I could do that, I could be a lot happier.)
- You are not your parents.
- You are not your siblings.
- You are not who people have told you that you need to or should be
- You are not locked into being who you were in the past
- Learn from your mistakes.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
- Allow yourself different experiences
- Try on life!
- NEVER stop evolving.
- Even when you do figure out an aspect of who you are, it's going to change.
- We are always growing.
- Let yourself be who you are, moment to moment, day to day, year to year.
How can I make all my dreams and goals real?
- Create and hold the vision
- What do your dreams look like?
- Be crystal clear on what you want.
- Ignore the naysayers, you can do anything.
- Give yourself permission to live the life you want. No matter what.
- Break through the fear.
- Have the experience, don't protect yourself from it.
- Overcome the Obstacles.
- Be Flexible.
- Don't block the flow of where your meant to go.
- Keep motivated.
Anyway I just liked that, and I hope that I can do those things and become the person I want to be (but I guess I have to figure out who I want to be first huh?). There was just one last thing that I liked from the book and I actually wrote this one down word for word.
"Who's the Fairest of Them All?
Here's what it comes down to:
in all the world, in all of time,
there will never be another girl like you.
No one will ever have your same story,
gifts, strengths, hopes and dreams.
No one will ever take the risks you take, learn the
lessons you learn, feel the pain you feel,
experience the same joys and triumphs.
So when it comes to who's the "best,"
remember that since no one can do you
better than you, no one can compare."
Yay, there's my motivational monologue for the week, haha.
